Ann Wynne - Skelmersdale(Diploma in Clinical Hypnotherapy)Joining The General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR)NOTES FOR GUIDANCEPreliminary Registration is a category of membership for those who have successfully completed a theoretical course of instruction in Hypnotherapy (usually via a home study / Internet distance learning programme) but who have not yet had the opportunity for practical tuition. Whilst the GHR recognises the relevance of quality distance learning programmes, we nonetheless concur with the generally accepted view that a certain level of practical instruction is vital before a person would be ready to commence actual practice as a hypnotherapist. Consequently, whilst from a legal point of view there is nothing to prevent anyone, regardless of their training, from offering hypnotherapy services, the GHR does not recognise or acknowledge someone to be a practitioner unless or until they have completed a minimum amount of practical tuition. Although the GHR does not offer training itself, we can nonetheless advise on the various options for acquiring the necessary practical instruction, and indeed are in constant communication with training providers to ensure that viable, cost effective programmes are always available for those who wish to extend their registration with us to full Practitioner status. We also understand that many people take distance learning courses in Hypnotherapy merely as a leisure interest or for self improvement purposes and may never wish to become practitioners. They may nonetheless wish to be associated with a professional body in order to keep abreast of relevant developments in the field and again, Preliminary Registration with the GHR addresses this need. SUPPORTING DOCUMENTATION It is essential that the GHR maintains as complete a record as possible with regard to an Applicant’s previous training. Consequently, copies of appropriate documentation must accompany all applications for Registration (i.e. Certificates / Diplomas confirming successful completion of a relevant home study / distance learning course.) PROFESSIONAL INDEMNITY INSURANCE Professional Indemnity & Public Liability Insurance is available through GHR recommended Block Schemes. Whilst it is not necessary to have such cover in place unless you are actually practising as a Hypnotherapist, the GHR accepts the possibility that some who are only preliminary registered will nonetheless offer therapy to others (whether on a fee paying basis or not) and in such cases, advises in the strongest possible way that suitable insurance must be in place beforehand. Consequently, if you wish to receive information on these Schemes, you should tick the relevant box on the Application Form. SUPERVISION Although preliminary registered members are not obliged to undertake Supervision, once they have progressed to either Affiliate or Practitioner status, they would need to participate in this beneficial process for a minimum of 2 hours in any 3 month period during their first 2 years of practice. (Thereafter, although ongoing Supervision is encouraged, it becomes a voluntary process). Supervision may be conducted via ‘one-to-one’, a ‘peer support group’ or a telephone / e-mail arrangement where circumstance dictates. Whichever method is employed, Registrants are advised to maintain a personal log of all such activity as they may be asked to provide suitable evidence of the previous 12 months Supervision at the time of their annual re-registration. Current lists of both One to One Supervisors and local Peer Support Groups are published on the GHR website but any Registrant experiencing difficulty in making suitable Supervision arrangements may contact the GHR head office for assistance.N.B. Registrants who undertake Supervision as a condition of their membership of other healthcare professions may apply to have this taken into account, providing that it is compatible with and relevant to the practise of Hypnotherapy. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) CPD is considered to be important for practising Hypnotherapists in order that they may keep abreast of new developments and techniques within the field. Although not obligatory for preliminary registered members, all who are registered at either Affiliate or Practitioner status are expected to participate in relevant CPD activity for a minimum of 25 hours annually whilst registered with the GHR. The GHR’s definition of CPD includes appropriate reading, Internet research or personal attendance at relevant workshops. (A regularly updated selection of CPD activities can be found on the GHR website under the ‘Notice Board’ section.) Practitioners may be asked to provide suitable evidence of the previous 12 months CPD involvement at the time of their annual re-registration and to facilitate this, samples of approved, user-friendly Data Sheets are available from the GHR head office on request. N.B. Registrants who undertake CPD as a condition of their membership of other healthcare professions may apply to have this taken into account, providing that it remains compatible with and relevant to the practise of Hypnotherapy.
